Education 📋

Taras “Terry” Liskevych

From taking the Ohio State Men to their first Final Four, to building a women’s collegiate powerhouse at UOP, to co-founding the AVCA (with UCLA’s Andy Banachowski), to coaching the USA Women’s National Team, to starting The Art of Coaching Volleyball (with John Dunning and Russ Rose), Terry is a true coaching legend.

10 Thoughts on Culture

  1. If you establish a culture that is higher/better than your competition/opposition — “YOU WILL WIN!”

  2. You cannot simply meet early in season and create a culture — it must be worked on every day.

  3. “Developing a culture means having a tradition that maintains the standards you want to define your program. Culture is established by the people who compose your team and is carried on through those people. You cannot merely expect culture to be a natural occurrence; it has to be taught and made a part of your everyday routine.” — Mike Krzyzewski, Duke Men’s Basketball Coach

  4. “They could care less how much you know, unless they know how much you care.” — Anson Dorrance, 22 National Championships - UNC Women’s Soccer

  5. Leadership is key. The Head Coach is the “ROLE MODEL.”

  6. The Head Coach must guide both staff & players with clarity – hold them accountable.

  7. The Head Coach is never too big to do the small things that have to be done.

  8. Let someone else praise your virtues. (Legacy)

  9. Get players’ buy-in.
“Terry — I am watching what you are doing and hearing what you are saying — keep it up — because eventually ‘the light bulb will go on for 1/3 of them’ and that is all you need to have a great team.” — Jane Ward, HC San Jose State & Captain of USA Women’s Volleyball Olympic Teams (1964 & 1968) to Terry (1977) — my second year at the University of the Pacific.

  10. Players driving the culture.
“When team leaders wrest the control of the locker room from you — you will truly be great.” — Bill Walsh, HC San Francisco 49ers to me in the early 90s.
